Is a social security number required to obtain an FHA loan?

In order to obtain FHA mortgage loan each FHA mortgage applicant must provide evidence of their Social Security Number (SSN) to the FHA mortgage lenders.
The FHA mortgage lenders must:
• Validate and document an SSN for each FHA mortgage applicant, co-FHA mortgage applicant, or cosigner on the FHA mortgage by:

– entering the FHA mortgage applicant’s name, date of birth, and SSN in the FHA mortgage applicant/Address validation screen through FHA Connection; and
– examining the FHA mortgage applicant’s original pay stubs, W-2 forms, valid tax returns obtained directly from the IRS, or other document relied upon to underwrite the mortgage; and

• Resolve any inconsistencies or multiple SSNs for individual FHA mortgage applicants that are revealed during mortgage processing and underwriting using a service provider to verify the SSN with the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Only State and local government agencies, instrumentalities of government and HUD-approved Nonprofit organizations are not required to provide an SSN.
